As usual, a few pieces in the 2012 programs of the Australia Ensemble@UNSW bring idioms from outside the concert tradition into the format of our festive and inclusive Saturday night musical events in Clancy Auditorium. Paquito D’Rivera’s Aires tropicales carries with it a substantial whiff of the melodies and rhythms of the composer’s Cuban heritage. Elena Kats-Chernin’s new Interludes and Rags indicates through its title that this piece will give ample representation to its Uzbekistan-born Australian composer’s fondness for the ragtime idioms that first became widely popular in the years from the 1890s to the end of World War I.

Australia Ensemble - A Class Of Its Own
For over thirty years The Australia Ensemble @UNSW, has been enthralling audiences around the world with a brand of chamber music that places modern Australian compositions alongside those of Mozart and Bach. In addition to its subscription series the Ensemble performs free lunchtime concerts and workshops at the University.
Surrealist Dreams and Sydney Harbour Anecdotes
The Australia Ensemble at UNSW is combining with mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell (Opera Australia, Australian Chamber Orchestra) and dancer Connor Dowling (Sydney Dance Company/Australian Ballet) to bring to life works by Arnold Schoenberg and Sydney's Barry Conyngham.
